DMK Candidates Dayanidhi Maran, Kalanidhi Veeraswamy and Sumathy Leading in Chennai Constituencies: Top Developments

Chennai Election Results 2019: DMK candidates are leading in all three Lok Sabha seats as per early trends. The capital city of Tamil Nadu has seen much political turmoil since the death of Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi, the two Dravidian icons. The first election to be held in the state after the death of the two leaders is also a referendum of sorts on the Palaniswami-Panneerselvam government. While Tamil Nadu recorded an average voter turnout of 71.90%, the Lok Sabha constituencies of Chennai South, Chennai Central and Chennai North recorded low turnout of 56.34 per cent, 58.69 per cent and 63.48 per cent, respectively.

Follow all the live updates from the Lok Sabha elections results here:

Top developments: DMK candidates Dayanidhi Maran, Kalanidhi Veeraswamy and Sumathy are leading in Chennai Central, Chennai North and Chennai South, respectively. Chennai South is one of the prestigious Lok Sabha constituencies coveted by all. The ruling AIADMK had again fielded sitting MP J Jayavardhan, son of Tamil Nadu fisheries minister D Jayakumar, who faced the DMK’s T Sumathi alias Thamizhachi Thangapandian and Kamal Haasan’s MNM candidate R Rangarajan, who is a former IAS officer.

The seat was once represented by luminaries such as DMK founder CN Annadurai, Union Minister (and later President) R Venkataraman, actor Vyjayanthimala Bali and TR Baalu, among others.

However, the constituency suffers from lack of basic facilities such as drinking water and proper sewerage connections, among other things. It comprising six Assembly seats — Virugambakkam, Saidapet, T Nagar, Mylapore, Velachery and Sholinganallur.

In the Chennai Central constituency, water was a major problem and PMK candidate SR Sam Paul said he would work to solve it by urging the government to build a new reservoir and also by linking rivers.

Paul was up against DMK strongman Dayanidhi Maran, who had won twice from the constituency in 2004 and 2009. The MNM fielded Kameela Nassar from this crucial Lok Sabha seat. In 2014, the seat was won by SR Vijayakumar of the AIADMK.

In Chennai North, former IPS officer AG Mourya contested on a Makkal Needhi Maiam ticket and attempted to lure voters with promises of developing infrastructure and adequate water supply. Mourya during his stint in the police department served North Chennai as Deputy Superintendent of Police (Ennore), Assistant Commissioner (Washermenpet), Deputy Commissioner (Washermenpet).

Mourya was up against DMK’s Kalanidhi Veerasamy, son of former minister ‘Arcot’ N Veerasamy, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam’s R Mohan Raj who contested under the AIADMK-BJP-PMK alliance.

North Chennai constitutes Thiruvottiyur, Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar, Perambur, Kolathur, Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar (SC) and Royapuram.

With 8 Leads So Far, KCR’s Gains Not as Huge as Expected, Federal Front Hopes Also Dashed: Telangana Election Result So Far

Telangana Election Result: Leads for all the 17 Lok Sabha seats in the state are in and K Chandrashekar Rao’s TRS is leading only in 8 seats as against exit poll predictions that, on an average, suggested that the party would win 13 seats. His hopes of playing kingmaker at the Centre have also been dashed with the BJP racing to absolute majority for the second consecutive time.

Follow all the live updates from the Lok Sabha election 2019 results here:

Top election result updates from Telangana: KCR’s TRS is leading in constituencies like Peddapalle, Zahirabad, Medak, Chevella, Warangal etc. KCR’s daughter Kavitha, however, is trailing in Nizamabad, where she was up against 178 farmers who contested in protest against non-fulfilment of demands. It is the BJP candidate, Arvind Dharmapuri, who is leading in Nizamabad, and in Karimnagar.

The Congress is leading only in Nalgonda.

Buoyed by its landslide victory in the Telangana Assembly elections last year and with opposition parties looking demoralised, the TRS and KCR had a clear edge in these elections.

Deserted by its MLAs, the Congress struggled to put up a strong fight against TRS while the the BJP’s prospects always looked remote in the state. The Telugu Desam Party chose not to contest the Lok Sabha election here after the party’s dismal showing in the Telangana assembly elections.

In the snap assembly elections last year, KCR had won a massive mandate, winning 88 out of 119 seats, riding on the goodwill generated by the welfare scheme launched by him in the last four-and-half years. The Congress, despite cobbling up a four-party front, including the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), was relegated to a distant second position with 21 seats.

In the 2014 election results, the TRS had bagged 11 seats while the Congress won two and the TDP, the YSR Congress, the BJP and the MIM got one each.

Senior Congress leader and former union minister Renuka Chowdary carried the party’s hopes in Khammam, while state unit president Uttam Kumar Reddy faced a tough battle in Nalgonda.

The CPI and CPI-M, which fought Assembly elections as a part of different alliances, had joined hands to field candidates in their former strongholds of Nalgonda and Khammam.

In Nizamabad, KCR’s daughter K Kavitha, who sought re-election for a second consecutive term, was locked in a keen battle against Madhu Yashki Goud of the Congress and D. Aravind of the BJP. Around 200 farmers also entered the fray in this constituency to highlight their hardships.

The BJP replaced its lone outgoing MP and senior leader Bandaru Dattatreya with G. Kishan Reddy in Secunderabad, a seat which was held by either Congress or BJP in the past. While Congress has fielded its former MP Anjan Kumar Yadav, state minister T. Srinivas Yadav’s son Sai Kiran Yadav is the TRS candidate.

Lok Sabha Election 2019 Live: NPP Candidate Agatha Sangma Wins in Tura, Congress Still Ahead in Shillong

Shillong: The Meghalaya Lok Sabha election 2019 results will start trickling as counting has now begun. Postal ballot counting has commenced in Shillong. National People’s Party’s candidate Agatha Sangma, who had been leading most of the way by a considerable margin of votes, is likely to secure her spot in the Tura constituency. In Shillong, the Indian National Congress’s candidate Vincent H.Pala currently leads by 1,45,130 votes. Stay with us to find out the fate of the one constituency left from the state – Shillong.

Chief candidates in Shillong include Vincent H.Pala from the Indian National Congress, BJP’s Sanbor Shullai and United Democratic Party’s Jemino Mawthoh. As far as Tura is concerned, The NPP, which is in power in the state, has put forth MP Agatha Sangma from the seat against Congress member and former chief minister Mukul Sangma. Agatha, 38, who is the younger sister of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and daughter of late Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Sangma, was elected twice to the Lok Sabha from Tura.

Back in 2004, the seats in Tura and Shillong were secured by INC and AITC. However, in 2009, the seat in Tura was secured by NCP while Shillong was secured by INC. Again in 2014, Shillong went to INC but Tura was secured by NPP. Giving BJP’s growing popularity in the northeastern states, it’ll be interesting to see if INC can maintain its hold in Shillong. Here are the main points: 1. Meghalaya is a state in northeast India and has 2 seats in the Lok Sabha of which 0 are reserved for Scheduled Castes and 2 are reserved for Scheduled Tribes.

2. Meghalaya also sends 1 member to the Rajya Sabha.

3. There are 60 Assembly constituencies in the state and the last Assembly elections were held in March 2018.

4. According to the latest available data, there are a total of 18,96,010 eligible voters in Meghalaya, of which 9,39,829 are male, 9,56,181 female and 0 voters of the Third Gender.

5. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Meghalaya voted in 1 phase on April 11, 2019.

6. Currently, the Congress and the National People’s Party (NPP) share one parliamentary seat each in the state.

7. Agatha Sangma, who won from Tura parliamentary constituency in the 2009 elections and served as a minister in the UPA-II government, had won the Assembly elections from South Tura in 2018.

8. Tura has been without an MP since last year as Conrad Sangma was the sitting member and had resigned after taking over in the state.

9. Tura comprises 24 assembly segments and there are over five lakh voters in the region.

10. The first Lok Sabha elections in Meghalaya were held back in 1952.

Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia Get Legal Notice for ‘BJP Wants to Kill Me’ Remark

New Delhi: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia have been served legal notice for claiming that the Bharatiya Janata Party wants to assassinate the duo.

After taking the legal recourse, BJP leader Vijender Gupta told reporters on Tuesday that the Aam Aadmi Party leaders were playing “below-the-belt politics”. “This is sad that Kejriwal is playing below-the-belt politics. He has been cheating Delhi people and blackmailing them emotionally for long. It is their defeat that they are saying that BJP is planning to attack Kejriwal and Sisodia and they might get killed like former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi,” Gupta was quoted as saying by ANI.

In the notice, it was also mentioned that if Kejriwal won’t apologise within seven days, then Gupta would take the matter to the court. “Delhi Police are spending crores of rupees on Kejriwal’s security. But he himself is unwilling to take it. I have sent him a notice seeking his apology within a week,” the BJP leader was further quoted as saying. Kejriwal on Saturday claimed he will be assassinated by his personal security officer, like former prime minister Indira Gandhi. He said the Bharatiya Janata Party is after his life and will kill him one day.

“BJP would get me murdered by my own PSO one day like Indira Gandhi. My own security officers report to BJP,” Kejriwal had told a news channel in Punjab.

Hitting out at him, BJP leader Vijay Goel said it is sad Kejriwal is doubting his PSO. It is sad that by doubting your PSO you have besmirched the reputation of Delhi police. You should choose your own PSO and if you need any help in this regard let me know. I wish you have a long life, Goel said in a tweet.

Responding to it, Kejriwal said on Twitter it is “not my PSO but Modi ji who wants to get me killed”.

Lok Sabha Election Results 2019: How RSS Shakhas Ensured BJP’s Campaigns Spread Among the Masses in Bihar

It was five-thirty in the morning in Bihar’s Nawada. While the rest of the town slept, a group of men, donned in khaki shorts had convened in a field. Just like every other day, these men, who were the members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), had gathered to hold their morning assembly or the shakha.

In a far corner, 80-year-old Brahma Dev stood and watched as the vibhag pracharak began to lead the shakha for the morning. Brahma ji, as he was fondly referred to, had been a full time swayamsevak for 70 years. Devoting his life to the cause, he had remained a bachelor and immersed his life in the steady drones of shakhas, held across the districts of Bihar.

A young man adjusted a metal pole that held the RSS’ saffron flag to the ground. One by one, the men approached the hoisted flag and raised their hand to the chest, palms facing the ground. They bowed down and lined up for physical activities. A whistle blown by the vibhag pracharak marked the beginning of the exercise. The men then paraded the ground under Brahma ji’s scrutiny, who stood in a corner and pointed out their mistakes. The town may be asleep, tucked in oblivion from all of this, but a sense of excitement clinged heavily in the air. With the polling for the seven phases of the Lok Sabha elections over, Nawada was buzzing with indistinct chatter about the battle of ballots. And the shakha was no exception to this. After an hour of physical activities, the men formed a circle and sat near the flag. “Swayam ab jaag kar humko, jagana desh hai apna (we ourselves need to rise now and awaken our nation),” the group began to chant a short hymn.

Brahma ji was now perched at the edge of the circle and led the discourse. “Who can tell me what the duties of a swayamsevak are?” he asked.

36-year-old Santosh Kumar, raised his hand. Kumar was an engineer by profession and worked for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) in the area. “Our prime responsibility is to ensure that we work for the welfare of people,” he said.

Before he could go any further, he was interrupted by Brahma ji, “Our first responsibility is to work for the welfare of a Hindu rashtra (nation),” he said while others nodded in agreement.

Brahma ji then explained that for every swayamsevak, it was mandatory to propagate the idea of the sangh (RSS) and convince at least three more individuals to join the shakha. On this point, the discussion took a political turn.

“The elections are approaching and we need to take our duties with utmost seriousness. I do not need to tell you which government the nation needs at this point in time,” said Brahma ji, in an apparent reference to the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).

“We need to speak to people in our professional and personal circles and ensure they vote in favour of the nation’s development,” he added.

A part of the circle was Ashok Kumar, a 47-year-old doctor and also the zila prabhandhak for Sangh in Nawada. He explained that RSS was not a political body and needed to play the role of making people aware about choosing the right government.

“We will not tell people which government to vote for, however, we will make them think about the qualities a perfect prime minister should have,” he said — his connotation towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi, more than obvious.

Among the gathered men was also an 18-year-old boy, Achyuth Kumar. A first year Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) student of KLS College, Nawada had been a swayamsevak since his childhood. He first started attending the shakha after being encouraged by his father at the age of 9. He was also a member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

“I joined the Sangh’s student politics because ABVP is the stepping stone to BJP,” said Achyuth, who aspired to contest elections someday. Apart from ABVP, the RSS-affiliated bodies includes the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal, Durga Vahini, Kisan Sangh, Swadeshi Jagaran Manch, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh and Seva Bharati.

The political overtones within the ranks of gathered RSS workers was unmissable.

However, Subodh Kumar, a local businessman in the area said that people associated with the Sangh were disappointed this time since a BJP candidate did not get a ticket from Nawada.

BJP’s sitting MP Giriraj Singh, who won the seat in 2014 by defeating RJD’s Raj Ballabh Prasad with a margin of nearly 1.4 lakh votes, was sent to Begusarai. This is because Nawada went to Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) as part of the seat-sharing formula of the National Democratic Alliance.

Chandan Kumar contested from Nawada as LJP candidate and RJD’s Vibha Devi contested as the Mahagathbandhan candidate. She is the wife of jailed former MLA, Raj Vallabh Yadav, who was disqualified recently following his conviction in a rape case.

“Chandan Kumar has hardly been seen in the area but we will still vote for him because that will ensure an additional seat for the NDA and will help BJP at the Centre,” Subodh Kumar added.

Brahma ji, however, considered all of them duty-bound to ‘educate masses’ and propagate the Hindutva ideology. “We need to explain Hindutva and our understanding of nationalism to the people. The RSS is the mother organisation, so any support for us translates into support for the BJP,” he said, in conclusion. After this, the Shakha headed for the daily prayer.

Solemn, but resolute in respect, the sevaks recited their prayers in front of the saffron flag, delivered a traditional salute and dispersed for the day.

Amid a prevailing tense situation following the exit poll predictions, the EC and local administration have taken all necessary steps in the state. Security has been tightened Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Opposition leader YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. Police officers are expecting all the candidates and senior leaders of the Naidu-led Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Reddy’s YSR Congress (YSRC) to come down to their leaders’ residences in Amaravati when counting would be underway.

Heightened security is also in place for other senior political leaders and counting centres with the deployment of 15 companies of paramilitary forces and local police. Sections 144, 30 have been imposed across all the counting centres in the state.

Only election observers will be allowed to carry on their cell phones. Postal votes will be counted first, followed by service votes. Then, the regular counting will begin.

The actual counting of votes polled in electronic voting machine (EVM)s will start at 8.30am. Votes for Lok Sabha and Assembly elections will be counted separately.

Electronic boards displaying trends and results have also been set up at all the centres.

Only after the results are uploaded in the EC’s Suvidha website, that outcome would be considered official.

The Result of Narasapuram Assembly constituency is expected to come fast, while voters of the Rampachodavaram Assembly seat may get to know the outcome last.

Counting of votes polled in EVMs are likely to end by 1pm, after which VVPAT slips would be matched. Slips of five VVPAT devices will be counted for accurate results. If any difference in result is found, there will be recounting of votes. If difference persists, the result will be declared on the basis of votes polled in VVPATs.

‘Baseless’: Election Commission Dismisses Questions on ‘Unsecured’ Movement of EVMs in Uttar Pradesh

New Delhi: After a few incidents of EVM’s being transported allegedly without any security were reported from Uttar Pradesh, the Election Commission has come out with a statement calling the allegations “baseless and frivolous”.

Addressing the allegations about each of the four places from where the incidents were reported, the poll panel said “the EVMs were in proper security and protocol”.

“In all the cases, polled EVMS and VVPATs were sealed properly in front of the political parties candidates in videography. CCTV cameras are installed and CPAF security is there. Candidates are allowed to have a watch on strongroom and one representative of each candidate is there 24×7. The allegations are baseless,” the EC said. The videos allegedly showing the EVMs being transported without security had surfaced at a time when the opposition parties have raised questions about efforts to tamper with them and demanded increased VVPAT matching, a plea that was rejected by the Supreme Court on Tuesday. On eastern Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur, where Bahujan Samaj Party candidate Afzal Ansari had held a sit-in outside the local strongroom, alleging that there was an attempt to take out a vehicle full of electronic voting machines, the Election Commission said the matter has been resolved and specific instructions have been issued.

Afzal Ansari is the brother of jailed Uttar Pradesh gangster Mukhtar Ansari. His opponent in Ghazipur is Union Minister Manoj Sinha of the BJP.

In Chandauli, the Samajwadi Party had shot a video showing EVMs being brought into a room into the counting centre, a days after voting for the seat had wrapped up on Sunday.

The EC said the EVMs were always in “proper security and protocol” and said the allegation was frivolous. Local officials had said that the machines seen in the video were 35 reserve EVM units from an assembly segment in the parliamentary seat.

The poll panel also said that protocol regarding EVMs was followed in eastern Uttar Pradesh’s Domariyaganj seat, where SP and BSP workers had reportedly ‘caught’ a mini-truck full of EVMs being taken out of the compound of the strongroom. The alliance workers said this was a ploy by the BJP to tamper with the machines.

Calling the agitation by the workers of the two parties “unnecessary”, the EC said that they were convinced by the local administration officials and the matter has been resolved.

The local administration had explained that these were also reserve units and they were being taken to be used in the next phase of voting. However, after the protests the Election Commission officials had taken the EVMs back inside the counting centre.

Similarly, in Jhansi constituency also, claims were made that there were similar discrepancies after a video tweeted by the handle of Welfare Party of India Maharashtra made the rounds. The EC said the protocol was followed in the presence of political party candidates and called it a “non-issue”.
