Rahul Gandhi Crosses 1-Lakh Lead Margin in Wayanad, Congress-Led UDF Leading in 19 Seats: Kerala Election Result Updates

Kerala Election Result 2019: The Congress-led UDF is sweeping Kerala at the moment, leading in all 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state. Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s Wayanad venture is going smoothly, all the more important with Gandhi trailing against Union minister Smriti Irani from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. The CPM-led ruling LDF is leading in just one seat.

Follow all the live updates from the Lok Sabha elections results here:

Top action from the Kerala poll result: With the UDF leading in all 20 Lok Sabha seats, the BJP’s has lost early leads in Pathanamthitta, the ground zero of of the Sabarimala temple protests that saw massive protests over entry of young women at the shrine. The BJP had fielded K Surendran here. Pathanamthitta has an estimated Scheduled Caste population of 12.3% and a Scheduled Tribe population of 1.02%. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Anto Antony of the Congress won in this seat.

The LDF is leading in the lone seat of Kasaragod.

Congress heavyweight Shashi Tharoor is leading in Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat after a few minutes of trailing against BJP’s Rajashekar Kummanam. In 2014 general too, Tharoor was trailing against BJP’s O Rajagopal in the early hours of counting.

Earlier Tharoor had earlier tweeted, “D-Day at last! Will it be D for Deliverance for the nation from 5 years of misgovernance, ineptitude & bigotry, or D for Disappointment & Despair for all who who believe in #InclusiveIndia, responsible governance, liberal social values & economic justice”

Kummanam Rajasekharan, BJP candidate from Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat, has offered prayers at Ayyaguru Ashram in Thycaud. Post prayers, he said, “For development of the state and welfare of its people, I think Kerala should move along with the National Democratic Alliance government in Delhi. Now that Kerala is coming up in mainstream, I am very much confident that I’ll win in this election.”

Kerala witnessed a three-cornered fight between the BJP, Congress and CPM at least in Pathanamthitta, the epicentre of the Sabarimala protests. If BJP succeeds in turning the wide support it received post the Sabarimala verdict into votes, K Surendran will be the first BJP Lok Sabha member from the state.

The CPM is battling for survival. The party is close to losing the status of a national party, no longer a player in former citadels like Tripura and west Bengal. Kerala is its last bastion in the country.

Given that it is a high-stake battle for all parties, a total of nine sitting MLAs were fielded this time. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) has fielded six legislators, while three Congress-led UDF MLAs are in the poll fray.

Pathanamthitta, where the Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa temple is located and witnessed to volatile protests against the state government’s decision to implement the September 28 verdict permitting women of all age groups into the shrine, recorded 71.39 per cent voting on April 23.

For the first time ever, repolling was held in Kannur and Kasargode Lok Sabha seats after it was ordered by the state’s Chief Electoral Officer following complaints of bogus voting which was later verified.

Kerala had voted on April 23 to elect 20 Lok Sabha candidates. A few days later, there were visuals of people casting votes more than once was identified, prompting CEO Teeka Ram Meena to order the re-polls. Cases have been registered against the Communist Party of India-Marxist and Indian Union Muslim League workers, after identifying their members of voting more than once.

Lok Sabha Results 2019: Anurag Thakur Wins Hamirpur, BJP Sweeps Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh Lok Sabha Election Results 2019:  BJP’s sitting MP from Hamirpur Anurag Thakur, has won the Lok Sabha elections 2019 seat in Himachal Pradesh.  BJP candidates Ram Swarup from Mandi, Kishan Kapoor from Kangra and Suresh Kumar Kashyap from Shimla are also leading with massive numbers.

Dominating Himachal Pradesh in all four constituencies, BJP is once again going for a clean sweep in the state as it leaves the Congress far behind. The grand old party’s attempts to reclaim its old bastion do not seem to have proven fruitful.

The exit polls released last week had predicted BJP’s victory in Himachal Pradesh, with most exit poll surveys showing the saffron party bagging all four seats. Follow all the live updates of Lok Sabha Election results here:  Here are the ten key developments from Himachal Pradesh you need to know ahead of counting:

1) The News18-Ipsos exit poll predicted the BJP will win all four Lok Sabha constituencies, while the Congress will draw a blank. The ABP Nielson also came up with a similar prediction. In 2014, the BJP had swept the hill state, defeating Congress candidates by massive margins.

2) The state witnessed 72.25% polling, exceeding the previous highest turnout of 65.3% in 1998, when the Congress won the Shimla seat and the BJP emerged victorious in Mandi, Kangra and Hamirpur. The BJP has dominated the Hamirpur constituency since 1998. Suresh Chandel was twice elected the MP in 1999, 2004. He was succeeded by Anurag Thakur, who won majority in 2009 and 2014 general assembly elections. This rural general constituency, which went to polls in the last phase of the Lok Sabha elections, 72,732 votes which was 10.40% of the total votes polled.

3) Caste plays a major role in determining the fate of the candidates as has been witnessed over the years, power being shared between Thakurs and Brahmins mostly. The equation between the two has been such that the Brahmins have played role of kingmakers in Himachal, though the chair of CM went to Thakurs every time. Beginning from the first chief minister of the state, Yashwant Singh Parmar to the present CM Jairam Thakur. The only exception for a brief period has been BJP’s Shanta Kumar, a Brahmin, who assumed the top role twice.

4) Scheduled castes, despite comprising 25.19% of the state’s population and being second only to Rajputs in numbers, have not organised themselves into a voting bloc. Other backward castes make up 17.1% of the population and can tilt the poll result in Kangra, Una, Hamirpur, Sirmaur and Solan districts. Tribal areas include Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti and Chamba districts where Gaddi is the most dominant tribe.

5) In Himachal Pradesh, Hamirpur is the most keenly observed constituency as as BJP’s sitting MP Anurag Thakur fights Congress’ Ram Lal Thakur to secure his bastion. In 2014, Anurag Thakur had won the seat by defeating the Congress candidate by a margin of 72,732 votes which was 10.40% of the total votes polled. Thakur, son of former chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, was also the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India from May 2016 to February 2017.

6) The Congress has fielded Ram Lal Thakur, a Congress MLA from Sri Naina Deviji Assembly seat, against Anurag. Meanwhile, an important development for Congress in these elections was the return of the 91-year-old Sukh Ram, who has been in and out of the Congress. He re-joined the grand old party in March, giving it a much-needed boost.

7) State legislators Kishan Kapoor and Suresh Kashyap, who have a lot of influence in their respective regions, are also in the fray for the parliamentary polls. The Congress had fielded Aashray Sharma in Mandi to take on siting BJP MP Ram Swaroop Sharma.

8) The major issues were lack of jobs, prices of farm produce, water scarcity and national security. The state depends heavily on tourism. However, this is a seasonal industry and a dearth of jobs in other sectors force the youth to often move to other states in search of employment. The scarcity of water in summer is a cause for concern in Shimla. Tourist-heavy areas such as the state capital of Shimla face the problem of encroachments. In a Rajput-dominated state, national security was an emotive issue during the election.

9) Himachal Pradesh is a state in north India and has 4 seats in the Lok Sabha of which 1 are reserved for Scheduled Castes and 0 are reserved for Scheduled Tribes. Himachal Pradesh also sends 3 members to the Rajya Sabha. There are 68 Assembly constituencies in the state and the last Assembly elections were held in December 2017.

10) According to the latest available data, there are a total of 51,59,000 eligible voters in Himachal Pradesh, of which 26,45,533 are male, 25,13,408 female and 59 voters of the Third Gender.

11) The state has one of the highest populations of government employees in India. This year, Himachal Pradesh may become the first Indian state where all households have cooking gas connection, according to the 2019-20 state budget.

Founded by Chhotubhai Vasava, a Gujarati tribal leader, in 2017, the Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) has surprised many in this area. Vasava was a JD(U) leader, but defected from the party over its tie-up with the BJP in Bihar in 2017. 2014 Lok Sabha election was a thumping victory for BJP in the state. – A little west of Jodhpur is Barmer, which will have Manvendra Singh – son of former Union Minister Jaswant Singh – taking up the Congress’ mantle. Manvendra Singh had quit the BJP, of which his father is a founding member, following differences with former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje. Riding on the Rajput community’s anger against Raje for denying his father a ticket in the 2014 elections, Manvendra Singh had famously coined the phrase – “Kamal Ki Phool, Hamari Bhool (Picking the Lotus, Our mistake)” – at a rally in Pachpadra last September. He joined the Congress a month later, reportedly on an assurance that he would get the Barmer ticket.

– The Bharatiya Janata Party in Rajasthan’s Nagaur tried to make most of the affinity young Jat voters have for Hanuman Beniwal, Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) leader and MLA from Khinvsar, by fielding him against former MP Jyoti Mirdha. However, the aggressive Jat leader who had won two seats in the assembly polls last year, denouncing the very party which he has now allied with – the BJP – had made some saffron party loyalists uncomfortable.

-An old adage in Rajasthan says, “whoever wins Mewar, wins the state.” Therefore in order for Congress to make a dent to BJP’s rampage, the grand old party needs to gain ground in South Rajasthan’s Mewar. In 2014, the BJP won all five (the party won all 25 Lok Sabha seats of the state). This was preceded by the BJP’S landslide in the assembly elections when the party won 163 seats in the house of 200. In Mewar’s 35 seats, BJP had won 31. In the last ten years, Congress has managed to win Mewar only once. In 2009, the Congress won all 5 after the party came to power in the state in 2008. The party won 24 seats in Mewar in the assembly elections.

Opposition Leaders Meet EC Ahead of Result Day, Demand VVPAT Verification Before Counting Votes

New Delhi: Leaders of as many as 22 opposition parties met the Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday and demanded verification of VVPAT slips of randomly selected polling stations before the counting of votes polled in the just-concluded Lok Sabha election begins on May 23.

They also demanded that if any discrepancy is found during VVPAT verification, 100 per cent counting of the paper slips of VVPATs of all polling stations of that particular Assembly segment should be done and compared with the electronic voting machine (EVM) results.

“We told the EC that the VVPAT machines should be counted first and if there is any discrepancy, then all of them in that segment should be counted,” Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters here after meeting EC officials. Azad’s party colleague Abhishek Singhvi said despite requests to the EC since months, the poll body has now said it will meet on Wednesday to discuss the issue. “We are asking the EC to respect the mandate of people. It cannot be manipulated,” Telugu Desam Party’s (TDP) N Chandrababu Naidu told reporters.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Satish Chandra Mishra alleged that “there is large-scale bungling relating to EVMs in Uttar Pradesh. We demand deployment of central forces”.

The opposition parties also raised concerns over the transportation of EVMs ahead of counting of votes and urged the EC to probe the issue.

The opposition parties are seeking transparency and fairness in the counting of votes and respecting the mandate of the people of the country.

In 22 crucial bypoll results, the AIADMK and DMK are both leading in 10 seats each. The 38 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu, the maximum in south India, is sharing the spotlight with assembly bypolls that will decide the fate of the E Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam’s AIADMK government. The election result will also end the question of who the public thinks is capable of carrying the mantle of Dravidian pride following the death of Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi.

Follow all the live updates from the Lok Sabha elections results here:

The latest from TN election and bypoll result: Its a neck and neck race between DMK and AIADMK in the assembly bypolls as both have taken leads in 10 seats each. Dayanidhi Maran has taken the lead in Chennai Central. In Kanyakumari, Congress candidate H Vasanthakumar is leading.

The DMK with 88 legislators has to win all 22 seats to take its tally, along with Congress (eight) and IUML (one) to 119, that is just one number over the simple majority.

In the 234 member Tamil Nadu Assembly, the ruling AIADMK has 114 members (including the Speaker), the DMK has 88, the Congress has eight, while IUML and Independents are one each. To attain a simple majority, the AIADMK has to win just four seats in the by-elections. In order to be comfortable safe, the AIADMK has to win eight or nine assembly seats.

Congress’s Karthi Chidambaram is leading in Sivagangai.

AIADMK’s MSR Rajavarman leads in Sattur by-election

BJP candidate CP Radhakrishnan is leading in Coimbatore Lok Sabha seat.

The Congress is leading in Trichy district while, interestingly, CPI(M) has picked up leads in Madurai. The AIADMK has so far not opened its account yet.

The Congress party’s H. Vasanthakumar, representing the Nanguneri assembly constituency, is contesting in the Lok Sabha polls from Kanyakumari constituency and it will be interesting to see which seat he would opt to retain in case he wins the Lok Sabha polls.

The Lok Sabha polls saw four-cornered contests between the two major fronts led by the AIADMK and DMK, respectively, the AMMK floated by Sasikala’s nephew and Independent MLA Dhinakaran and the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) started by actor-politician Kamal Haasan. Both the AMMK and MNM made their electoral debut.

Maharashtra Lok Sabha Election Result 2019: Supriya Sule Well Ahead, Ashok Chavan Trails

Baramati has been the bastion Pawar family for years. NCP supremo Sharad Pawar himself had held the seat of Baramati for more than three terms and has also been union minister. His daughter Supriya trailing in the counting shows that NCP is losing its stronghold in Baramati. Sharad Pawar has also faced a lot of criticism after the candidature of his grandson Parth was declared from Maval. He is trailing while Shrirang Barne of Shiv Sena is leading in Maval.

Congress strongman Ashok Chavan who had retained Nanded seat in Modi wave is trailing in Nanded.

Maharashtra is one of the most important states to look for in the results table. The sends 48 MPs to the parliament including six from the financial capital, Mumbai, of the country. The farmer distress and drought has been issues that has remained into picture since the inception of the state in 1960. -BJP leads on three seats while Shiv Sena on three seats. NCP is leading on two seats while Raju Shetti of Swabhmani Paksh is leading from Hatkanangale. Congress could not open their account yet in Maharahstra.

-The BJP seems to be very confident about their victory in the state of Maharahstra. The party has already erected the stages and Pandals in Mumbai and Pune where celebrations are supposed to take place. The trend can be tracked once the first round is completed. Nitin Gadkari’s house is all set for the celebration with the decorations and pandals.

-The bastion of Sharad Pawar, Baramati will be a key contest. Supriya Sule, a daughter of Pawar is contesting against Kanchan Kul pf BJP. This is expected to be a tough fight since the winning margin of Sule has dropped substantially in the last election from 45.9 to 6.5 per cent votes.

-In Beed, the caste arithmetic is expected to play the important role. BJP has an advantage of social engineering by late veteran leader Gopinath Munde. His daughter is contesting for her second term. She is in contest with NCP candidate Bajrang Sonawane. Maratha and Banajara, both the communities which constitute around 15 per cent of the voters, hold a potential to sway the results.

Jharkhand Lok Sabha Election Results 2019: Saffron Wave Again as BJP Takes Lead in 11 Seats While Congress Clings to 2

Jharkhand Lok Sabha Election Results 2019: BJP, which managed to hold the lead in 12 seats through the initial counting, is down to eleven seats – Dhanbad, Ranchi, Palamau, Hazaribagh, Chatra, Kodarma, Jamshedpur, Khunti, Godda, Lohardaga, Rajmahal and Dumka- out of 14 constituencies. Congress takes lead in Singhbhum and Khunti. While AJSU (All Jharkhand Students Union) is leading in Giridih and JMM in Rajmahal. Although Jharkhand has traditionally remained a BJP bastion since the early 1990s, the saffron party is up against a stiff opposition in the form of a grand alliance, the only one of its kind in India right now. Four opposition parties — the Congress, along with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the Jharkhand Vikash Morcha (Prajatantrik) and the Rastriya Janata Dal (RJD) — were able to work out a seat sharing formula. The BJP’s continued victory in the state that it has dominated for decades depends on its ability to counter foes, both within and outside. Apart from battling its own anti-incumbency and the oppositions barbs focused around joblessness, land rights and anger amongst the state’s sizable tribal population, the BJP has also been plagued by a series of rebellions from its own party members. To counter this, the BJP has turned to the charisma of its Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Will it be enough or will the Mahagathbandhan end the saffron surge in Jharkhand and what impact will the 2019 Lok Sabha election results have on the Assembly elections in the state, likely to be held in the coming months?

Follow all the LIVE updates of Lok Sabha Elections Result 2019 here: Here are the top developments you need to know: 1. BJP is leading in eleven seats – Dhanbad, Ranchi, Palamau, Hazaribagh, Chatra, Kodarma, Jamshedpur, Khunti, Godda, Lohardaga, Rajmahal and Dumka – out of 14 constituencies. Congress takes a lead in Khunti and Singhbhum. AJSU (All Jharkhand Students Union) is leading in Giridih and JMM in Rajmahal.

2. Union minister of state for civil aviation Jayant Sinha is leading in Hazaribagh. Before, Sinha his father Yashwant Sinha has represented this seat thrice as a member of the BJP. Against him is the Congress’s Gopal Sahu, the younger brother of former Ranchi MP Shiv Prasad Sahu. In the last election, the junior Sinha defeated the Congress’s Saurabh Narayan Singh by a margin of 1.5 lakh votes. The Communist Party of India (CPI) veteran leader and former Hazaribagh MP Bhuneshwar Prasad Mehta is also contesting from the seat.

3. Congress’s Geeta Kora takes a lead in Singhbhum against the BJP candidate Laxman Giluwa, who in 2014 Lok Sabha elections won in this seat by defeating the JBSP candidate by a margin of 87,524 votes which was 11.01% of the total votes polled in the constituency. And, Congress’s Sukhdeo Bhagat takes lead in Lohardaga constituency. The seat has a significant Christian population. Chamra Linda, who secured third position in 2014 owing to his large following among Christian community by securing more than 80,000 votes, has extended support to the Congress candidate. In 2014, the BJP candidate, Sudarshan Bhagat, won by just 6,000 votes margin.

4. Congress’s candidate Kali Charan Munda takes a lead in Khunti against the BJP candidate and former chief minister Arjuna Munda.

5. The BJP candidate Pashupati Nath Singh is leading in Dhanbad parliamentary constituency. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Pashupati Nath Singh of BJP won in this seat by defeating the INC candidate by a margin of 2,92,954 votes which was 25.61% of the total votes polled in the constituency. BJP had a vote share of 47.51% in 2014 in the seat. There were a total of 31 contestants in 2014.

6. In Dhanbad, though 20 candidates are in the fray, the principal contest is between BJP candidate Pashupati Nath Singh and Congress nominee Kirti Azad. Both the BJP and Congress have entered into political alliances in the state and are banking on support of their partners to sail over troubled waters.

7. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Ram Tahal Choudhary of BJP won in this seat by defeating the Congress candidate by a margin of 1,99,303 votes which was 18.99% of the total votes polled in the constituency. BJP had a vote share of 42.74% in 2014 in the seat. There were a total of 28 contestants in 2014.

8. The grand alliance saw the Congress contest in seven seats, the JMM in four, the JVM(P) in two and RJD in one. The BJP meanwhile has attacked the alliance as one of convenience and has been relying heavily on PM Narendra Modi in its campaign. CM Raghubar Das said during a campaign speech, “People have realised that the country needs a Prime Minister like Narendra Modi for safeguarding religion, the nation’s security and overall development.”

9. In 2014, the BJP received 40.7 percent of the seats, while the four opposition parties cumulatively polled a total of 36.8% votes. The BJP won 12 seats of the total 14.

Marandi, the state’s first CM, is contesting from JVM(P), Munda is the BJP candidate from Khunti, Soren is fighting from Dumka. Das was the first non-tribal CM of the state.

11. To add to this, Madhu Koda — an independent MLA, who was the CM for nearly two years from 2006 to 2008 — is not contesting due to his conviction in the coal scam, but is spearheading the campaign for his wife Geeta, who is contesting from Singhbum on a Congress ticket

12. The BJP didn’t give tickets to four sitting MPs. However this led to feuds within the party. For instance, in Ranchi, the BJP dropped its sitting MP Ramtahal Chaudhary in favour of Sanjay Seth. Chaudhary, meanwhile refused to step out of the race and is contesting as an independent – something the Congress candidate, Former Union Minister Subodh Kant Sahay is keen to exploit.

At Least 60 Arrested in Bengal’s Bhatpara After Poll-day Clashes; TMC, BJP Blame Each Other

Kolkata: West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday continued to blame each other over the violence in Bhatpara Assembly constituency – that voted in a bypoll last Sunday – while over 60 people have been arrested.

The by-polls were necessitated after Arjun Singh, who defected to the BJP from Trinamool Congress, resigned as Bhatpara MLA to contest the Lok Sabha polls. His son Pawan Kumar Singh is fighting the Assembly by-polls on a BJP ticket.

He faces former minister Madan Mitra of the Trinamool. “Police are beating up women and their role has called for immense protests. It is highly shameful. I want Election Commission to deploy military here and assign a special observer to oversee law and order and restore peace,” Singh said. On the other hand, Mitra alleged that BJP workers had torched the residences of Trinamool workers and councillors and the party has informed the District Magistrate about the situation.

“We want the rule of law to be in place immediately. If it is not established, people will take the matter in their hands,” he said.

Earlier, state Food Minister and Trinamool North 24 Parganas district President Jyotipriyo Mullick had blamed Singh and the central forces for disruptions and obstruction of trains at Kakinara station.

“Singh and his men are creating trouble. They are setting shops and houses on fire, disrupting trains and harassing the public. The paramilitary forces, deployed during the elections, are also supporting them. We have met the District Magistrate and sought their arrest within 24 hours,” he said.

Police have made several arrests and deployed the Rapid Action Force (RAF) to control the situation. “Till morning 62 people were arrested. Raids are on and there have been more arrests. Some explosive material has also been recovered,” a senior officer of Barrackpore Police commissionerate said.

He said prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, banning assembly of more than four people in an area, have been imposed and police pickets posted. “We are announcing that people should not believe in rumours,” the officer added.

Lok Sabha Election Results 2019: How to Predict Uttar Pradesh Elections Before Anyone Else

The state that sends most number of MPs to the Parliament is also the state which posed the stiffest resistance to BJP’s juggernaut in form of the historic BSP-SP-RLD alliance.

Which is why results in Uttar Pradesh are doubly crucial to the overall outcome. Since the final results may take time, we have decided to prepare a list of xyz seats, decisive indications from which will give us a fair idea of the direction in which winds are blowing.

Follow all the LIVE updates of Lok Sabha Election Results 2019 here Since politics is not a zero sum game, we urge you to apply the usual caveats and exercise discretion. Will Mahagathbandhan be able to woo a section of Brahmins away from BJP+ in some pockets of east UP

Seats to watch out for – Sant Kabir Nagar, Pratapgarh, Bhadohi

Because in all these seats BSP has fielded Brahmins to attract a section of upper caste vote, seemingly assured of MGB’s strength to attract Dalits, OBCs and Muslims in these seats. If the party is able to attract a chunk of what is considered BJP’s core vote, it may be considered not just enough to win these seats by a good margin but a reflection of a larger social coalition that MGB has tried to stitch together in the state.

How well will BJP perform in MGB strongholds

Seats to watch out for – Ghazipur, Amroha, Bijnor

This will be a test of MGB’s attempt to transfer party votes and BJP’s attempt to not let this happen. Ghazipur’s 40% huge population is comprised of Yadavs, Muslims and Dalits; Amroha similarly has a sizeable population of Muslims and SCs and a chunk of Jat votes; Bijnor again has a sizeable Muslim population which added to a number of Dalits is likely to give MGB a lot of confidence. BJP’s strong showing in these seats could indicate, among other issues, a problem with vote transfer between core SP, BSP and RLD loyalists.

Will Jats support BJP or MGB

Seats to watch out for – Mathura, Baghpat, Muzaffarnagar, Hathras, Fatehpur Sikri, Kairana

In this sub-region of West UP, sometimes referred to, for the sizeable presence of Jats, as ‘Jatland’, Ajit Singh’s ability to convince Jats to side with MGB will decide the coalition’s future. Jat community, which is said to affect outcome of nearly a dozen seats in West UP, had overwhelmingly sided with the BJP in last general polls. Communal polarization due to ’13 Muzaffarnagar riots was one reason for it. But this time RLD is banking on its ground work and distress among Jat sugarcane farmers.

Will Congress expand beyond Raebareli and Amethi

Seats to watch out for – Dhaurahra, Barabanki, Kushi Nagar

Congress, being left out of MGB, decided to chart a course of revival in Uttar Pradesh by itself, as Priyanka Gandhi herself claimed. The first signs of this revival, and Priyanka Gandhi’s leadership skills, will be borne out by the number of seats scored, except the two ‘family’ seats of Raebareli and Amethi, by the grand old party in this state.

Dhaurara was a seat that Congress leader Jitin Prasada fought for, from his party high command. It is also a seat that he’s won in the past. With a vote share of over 50% in 2009 before he was reduced to fourth position in ‘14 polls. Given the heavy presence of upper castes here, Prasada has a shot at reclaiming his old seat.

Barabanki presents another chance for the Congress to score. Congress’ candidate here is its party’s general secretary PL Punia’s son Tanuj Punia. PL Punia, a Dalit leader, was himself elected the MP from here in ‘09 and was the runner up in ‘14. Support from Muslims, who form a sizeable chunk of the population here, and a section of upper castes can see Congress through.

Just like several other constituencies like Unnao, Congress has repeated its candidate victorious in ‘09 polls here. RPN Singh whose father had won this seat twice is his party’s face here. Being an upper caste dominant seat, and given the family association of his father, RPN Singh, who was the runner up in ‘14 will hope for some support from Muslims and absence of any Modi wave this time.

Apart from these contests some other constituencies which will be good indicators of MGB’s performance versus that of BJP+’s are seats like Ambedkar Nagar, Meerut, Gautam Budhh Nagar. BJP’s non-Yadav OBC, non-Jatav Dalit formula will be up against MGB’s formula of (Dalit+Yadav+Muslim) plus votes from some other communities like Gujjars.
