“Don’t Be Afraid”: Rahul Gandhi’s Message To Party On “Fake Exit Polls”

New Delhi:

A day before the counting of votes, Congress president Rahul Gandhi has urged party men to be “alert in the next 24 hours” and be fearless in a tweet similar to his sister Priyanka Gandhi’s audio message on Sunday, when exit polls predicted a dismal scenario for the party. He also called the exit polls fake.

“The next 24 hours are important. Be alert and vigilant. Don’t be afraid. You are fighting for the truth. Don’t be disheartened by what the fake exit polls are propagating. Have faith in yourselves and the Congress. Your hard work will not be in vain, Jai Hindi,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted in Hindi.

Exit polls after the last day of voting for the national election on Sunday predicted 300-plus for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance and 122 for the Congress and its allies. “Non-aligned” parties were given 114.

The same night, Priyanka Gandhi said in a message to party workers that they should not fall for “rumours” intended to make them drop their guard ahead of the counting of votes.

“My dear Congress workers, sisters and brothers… Don’t let rumours and exit polls discourage you. This is being done just to break your determination. It is very important that you remain alert amid all this. Please continue to keep vigil outside strongrooms and counting centres. We are confident that our combined efforts will bear fruit,” she said in the audio message.

Rahul Gandhi’s “dare nahin (don’t be afraid)” advice for party men comes as the Congress and other opposition parties allege attempts to “steal the mandate” by manipulating EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines). Since yesterday, leaders of the Congress, Samajwadi Party, BSP and others have kept a close watch on strongrooms where the vote machines are being stored ahead of Thursday’s count.

In Uttar Pradesh, Congress workers sat overnight outside the EVM store rooms in Meerut and in Raebareli, the stronghold of the Gandhis from where Sonia Gandhi is seeking re-election.

“Want President’s Rule To End As Soon As Possible”: J&K Governor

Srinagar:

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik Wednesday said his administration wants the President’s Rule to end in the state at the earliest but the final call on the timing of assembly elections will be taken by the Election Commission.

Asked if some officials within his administration were not keen on transfer of power to an elected government in the state, the governor said there was nothing like that in his notice.

“We want this (President’s Rule) to end as soon as possible. The final call on holding assembly elections in the state will be taken by the Election Commission,” Mr Malik told reporters after inaugurating the second phase of the Jehangir Chowk-Rambagh flyover.

Recently, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also said a decision on holding assembly elections in the state was the prerogative of the Election Commission but indicated a decision could be announced after the completion of the Lok Sabha polls.

Jammu and Kashmir was placed under Governor’s Rule on June 19, 2018 after the PDP-BJP coalition government fell as the BJP decided to pull out of the alliance.

The state assembly was kept in suspended animation to allow for the possibility of any new combination of parties to form a government in the state.

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti supported by the National Conference and the Congress staked claim for government formation on 21 November, 2018.

Within minutes, People’s Conference chairman Sajad Lone, who had just two MLAs, also staked claim for government formation.

The governor decided to dissolve the assembly on the grounds that he wanted to prevent horse-trading.

The state was brought under President’s Rule on December 19, 2018 for a period of six months as elections could not be held within six months of imposition of Governor”s Rule in the state.

The President’s Rule will have to be extended again on June 19, 2019 as assembly elections have not been held so far. The order for extending President”s rule will have to be ratified by Parliament.

Future Security Challenges Could Be “Grave”: Ajit Doval

New Delhi:

Stressing on the need to enhance the capabilities and professionalism of security forces, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on Wednesday said these measures were essential as future challenges in the security and defence domain could be “grave”.

Speaking at the annual investiture ceremony of the Border Security Force (BSF), the former chief of the Intelligence Bureau said the agencies working for the country’s protection should “reinvent and upgrade” their technology prowess.

“You should work to enhance your professionalism, capability and strength as security challenges in the days to come could be more grave,” Ajit Doval said.

He expressed satisfaction that agencies like the BSF and those in the security and intelligence set-up of the country were working with better technology and trying to modernise the gadgets of this trade.

The NSA praised the BSF, the largest of the three border-guarding forces in the country, for ensuring the safety and security of India’s borders.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) are the two other border-guarding forces.

The BSF, which has about 2.5 lakh personnel, guards two of the country’s most sensitive borders — with Pakistan and Bangladesh.

“Your professionalism is of top level,” the NSA said.

Earlier at the event, Mr Doval gave away gallantry and service medals to the officials of the force for rendering exceptional service in the line of duty.

Those decorated with gallantry medals include Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Baljit Singh Kasana, Deputy Commandant Yudhhvir Yadav, assistant sub-inspectors Surjit Singh Bishnoi and Om Prakash, constables Parasram, Vibhas Batbayal and M K Choudhary.

The team bravely foiled an armed intrusion bid, supported by unprovoked firing, from the Pakistani side, along the India-Pakistan border in Jammu, in November, 2016 as part of “Operation Chamliyal”, their citation said.

Inspector Bhupinder Singh was awarded the police medal for gallantry for effectively retaliating Pakistani firing and killing a terrorist in October, 2016 along the international border in Jammu’s Samba.

DIG Azad Singh Malik was presented the “Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak” for saving a 12-year-old girl, who had been electrocuted from an electric pole near the CWG village in the national capital on November 14, 2018.

The officer, who was returning home after work, rushed the girl to a nearby hospital and ensured treatment to her that saved her life, his citation read.

In Case Against Rahul Gandhi For Remarks On PM Modi, Court Reserves Order

New Delhi:

A Delhi court on Wednesday reserved for June 7 an order on a complaint seeking a case against Rahul Gandhi for his alleged ”Khoon ki Dalali” remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal reserved order on the complaint, filed by advocate Joginder Tuli, which has sought direction to the police to register a case against Mr Gandhi for allegedly making derogatory remarks in 2016 against PM Modi, accusing him of hiding behind the blood of soldiers and cashing in on their sacrifice.

The Delhi Police had on May 15 filed an action taken report before the court in which the police had said that Mr Gandhi allegedly made the defamatory statement against the prime minister for which a suit may be filed.

Indian-Origin Scientist To Help US Soldiers Control Robots Using Thoughts

Washington:

An Indian-origin scientist and his team in the US have won a whopping USD 20 million contract from an agency of the defence department to develop a system that could allow a soldier to control multiple unmanned aerial vehicles or even a bomb disposal robot with his thoughts.

The team headed by Gaurav Sharma, a senior research scientist at Battelle, is among six teams to win grants to develop brain-machine interfaces, according to a statement by the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

Mr Sharma, 40, has been tasked to develop a system that could ultimately allow a soldier to put on a helmet and use his mind to control multiple unmanned aerial vehicles or even a bomb disposal robot, Battelle, a Columbus-based R&D organisation, said in a statement.

Battelle’s Next-Generation Nonsurgical Neurotechnology (N3) programme for a minimally invasive neural interface system, has been named ”BrainSTORMS” (Brain System to Transmit Or Receive Magnetoelectric Signals).

BrainSTORMS involves the development of a novel nanotransducer that could be temporarily introduced into the body via injection and then directed to a specific area of the brain to help complete a task through communication with a helmet-based transceiver, the statement said.

Upon completion, the nanotransducer will be magnetically guided out of the brain and into the bloodstream to be processed out of the body, it said.

“This is one of the most exciting and challenging projects I have worked on,” said Mr Sharma.

“With BrainSTORMS, we will again be pushing the limits engineering and physics. If successful, this technology would not only provide a safe and efficient way to facilitate human machine interactions but also has the potential to revolutionise the study of the nervous system,” Sharma said.

Battelle began the first phase of the programme with USD 2 million in funding to demonstrate the core concept of the technology. If the team”s concept proves successful, Battelle will receive additional funding for the second and third phases of the programme, the statement said.

The full contract is worth approximately USD 20 million over four years for the Battelle team.

Sharma, was instrumental in development of a neuroprosthetic technology named NeuroLife which has enabled a quadriplegic man to move his hand again using his thoughts.

Battelle has for years successfully demonstrated brain-computer interface (BCI) project.

Japan’s Sumo Fans Welcome Trump Trophy But Wish He’d Sit Cross-Legged

Tokyo:

US President Donald Trump can expect a warm welcome from the sumo wrestling community when he presents a custom-made “Trump Award” to the winner of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo on May 26.

However, with Trump expected to view the bouts from a chair instead of sitting cross-legged on a cushion as ringside viewers typically do, some fans have been left upset at his special treatment.

Trump is expected to watch the final three bouts on the last day of the tournament at the Ryogoku Kokugikan venue alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during his May 25-28 state visit. Their wives, Melania Trump and Akie Abe, are also expected to attend.

He will present the trophy to the winning wrestler following other awards, the Japanese Sumo Association (JSA) said.

osu2li54Donald Trump will have to climb onto the ‘dohyo’ – or sumo ring – to present the award alongside Shinzo Abe.

“I’ve always found that fascinating,” Trump said of sumo at a news conference in April.

Some members of the sumo community welcomed the increased exposure that Trump’s visit will give their sport.

“Sumo is Japanese traditional culture. It is not just about winning and defeat. So, it is good that the president is involved and will present a trophy,” said Kazuo Saito, a sumo coach at Nippon Sports Science University.

Saito also doesn’t think the US leader’s presence will affect the wrestlers’ performance.

“I believe that they will compete at their best,” he said.

Trump, 72, will sit in a chair, instead of on a “zabuton” cushion on the floor as is customary.

That has upset some sumo fans.

Masaru Tomamoto, 73, said he sympathised with Trump but nonetheless would prefer the US leader to follow custom.

“I also want to sit on chair as we watch sumo wrestling,” admitted Tomamoto over a steaming bowl of chanko nabe, the stew favoured by sumo wrestlers.

“But if (Trump) watches a Japanese traditional sport, sumo, I think that it would be much better for him to sit cross-legged with the cushion on the floor, rather than on chair.”

Izumi Chiba from Sapporo in northern Japan echoed the sentiment: “As we say, when you are in Rome, do as the Romans do.”

Trump will have to climb onto the ‘dohyo’ – or sumo ring – to present the award alongside Abe. Shoes are typically not worn on the dohyo so he may have to wear slippers or shoe covers.

Almost one-eighth of the 11,000 seats have been reserved for Trump, Abe and their security teams. Ordinary attendees will have to go through security checks, media reported.

Trump will not be the first foreign dignitary to present a trophy to a sumo tournament winner.

Former French President Jacques Chirac, who was known as a big sumo fan, created the President of the Republic of France Cup and presented the trophy to the winning wrestler in 2000. It was presented every year until Chirac left office in 2007.

Naveen Patnaik Raring For Record Fifth Term Amid Rumours, Attacks

New Delhi:

Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister of Odisha, is seeking a record fifth term in office as his party, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), faces an aggressive BJP – a former ally – which has made inroads into the coastal state. The 72-year-old, one of India’s longest-serving chief ministers, is confident, having even invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to his swearing-ceremony as the state was in the middle of voting for both the national and assembly elections.

Mr Patnaik contested from two seats for the first time in this assembly election – Hinjili, his home turf in south Odisha from where he has been winning since 2000, and Bijepur in west Odisha.

In the run-up to the elections, Mr Patnaik battled raging rumours over his health; the Prime Minister, at a public meeting in the state, said the Odisha government was taking “10 minutes to walk 10 steps” in an apparent dig at the Chief Minister.

A fitness video – the septuagenarian was seen doing cardio, lifting weights – was seen as the mild-mannered Chief Minister’s attempt to silence opponents and detractors as he signed off with a “getting ready to fight for the people of Odisha” message at the end of the video.

The Chief Minister, once a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance between 1998 and 2009, maintains that he’s “equidistant” from that party as well as the Congress. Claiming that no party will get a majority in the national elections, Mr Patnaik has said that he will support any party or coalition that supports the development of Odisha, especially in the aftermath of the monster cyclone Fani that killed 64 people and left a trail of destruction in the state.

Unlike some of his counterparts – former and present – in other states, Naveen Babu, as he is fondly called, has said that he has no “national ambitions” and is content to “stay in Odisha”.

The son of former chief minister and iconic leader Biju Patnaik, Naveen Patnaik formed the Biju Janata Dal after quitting the Janata Dal in 1997.

He was elected to Parliament from the Aska constituency – the seat held by his father – in 1997 and represented it till 2000. He also served as Union Minister of Mines in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, before resigning and taking oath as Chief Minister after his party and the BJP won the assembly elections in Odisha.

The Doon School-educated Chief Minister, who spent much of his adult life away from Odisha, has been often been derided over his lack of fluency in the Odia language.

But over the last two decades, the leader, always seen in is trademark crisp white kurta-pyjama, has gained popularity as a clean and efficient administrator.

Sushma Swaraj Discusses Wuhan Summit Agenda With China’s Foreign Minister

Bishkek:

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday met her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the sidelines of a multilateral meeting in Kyrgyzstan’s capital Bishkek and discussed issues of bilateral interest, including the implementation of understanding reached during last year’s Wuhan Summit.

Ms Swaraj arrived in Bishkek on Tuesday to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Council (SCO) of Foreign Ministers in the Kyrgyz capital.

“Continuing the momentum of high-level exchanges. EAM @SushmaSwaraj met Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi on the sidelines of #SCO Foreign Minister’s Meeting in Bishkek. Discussed issues of bilateral interest, including the implementation of understanding reached during Wuhan Summit,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said.

The April 27-28 Wuhan summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping was largely credited to have turned around the bilateral relations soured by the 73-day-long Doklam standoff, triggered by Chinese troops attempts to build a road close to Indian border in an area also claimed by Bhutan in 2017.

India had objected to it as it came close to a key highway connecting with North Eastern states. The standoff ended after Chinese troops halted plans to build the road.

After the Wuhan summit, both the countries stepped up efforts to improve relations on different spheres including the military-to-military ties.

PM Modi and President Xi issued strategic guidance to their militaries to strengthen communications to build trust and understanding, a move aimed at avoiding a Doklam-like situation in the future.
